Fandom Radio - Saturday, November 1, 2008

"I'll have you know I'm missing a perfectly good wedding reception for this. No, I didn't go earlier, but I like to make an entrance and I could hear the music from the TARDIS anyway. It's no Puccini, but it makes for good dancing. Really, no one wants to see me dancing in public. Hello, Fandom! In case you've come down with temporary amnesia brought on due to shock or too much alcohol, I'll fill you in. This is not your conscience, nor is it the voices in your head if you happen to have any. I'm the Doctor and you're listening to WTFH pirate radio. Sadly without a pirate. I suppose I could wear an eyepatch and get an accent to fit in, but not tonight.

I'm going in search of canapes after this. Love little bite-sized food. Well, I wouldn't call it food."

*chitter*

"Well, you could, but this is coming from someone who has the same staple diet as a desperate Survivor contestant."

School

"Let's see what was going on today. Ahhh, consistency. One day I'm going to stop in and say hello to Mac, who had the library open as always on a Saturday. Aaaaand everyone must have been in town because the only other people doing anything reportable on campus were Cal and Amber, who were caring for their fake baby. That wasn't all they were doing, mind, since Cal was typing up a story and they both talked about having a love-hate relationship. Surprisingly, they work. I didn't say they were particularly healthy.

Town

There weren't only people in town, but people leaving town. Liir and Friends, which could very well be a comedy troupe, gathered at the causeway to head off to a universe that is not this one, because apparently you can just do that now instead of having to burn up a sun or break the laws of, well, everything. Where was I? Right! Liir and friends. Friends being Penelope, who very much enjoyed Halloween - really? I had a stomach ache all night, Ino who was tired but ready to plan for their trip abroad...very, very abroad, and Tony the student, not the...other one, who was eager to know the local tips for where they were going.

A squirrel tells me that it's Tyler's birthday, so happy birthday Tyler, even if you did spend it doing not much at all. Birthdays get boring after a while. The Dean and the Sheriff, otherwise known as Aly and Roy were up to their usual tricks which are best left behind closed doors and really, squirrels, you're voyeurs. The lot of you. No, I'm not giving you a TARDIS key, not even if you offer to collect nuts for me for the winter.

The usual businesses were open for weekend trading. Rosie finished working on a bat'leth and received a visit from the lighthouse keeper Tully over at the Gig, Pizza Planet had free pumpkin muffins which you wouldn't expect but there they were courtesy of Jen, Viki had leftover sweets at The Arms Hotel where the special was a Chocolate and Almond Torte, sounds good, and Charlotte was putting up posters for the next art gallery exhibition.

Hurley played Rush-not-Puccini at Groovy Tunes and when Chad stopped by Hurley told him about his second job over at the flower shop. Turtle & Canary was open, with a very ill Turtle. Too much chocolate, Turtle? Jack was fiscally-minded and stocked up on 50% off sweets and Marco came looking for hugs, but left empty-handed. Sheriff Mustang was busy as ever at the Trooper Station with complaints about balloon animals and clowns. I used to know someone who was terrified of clowns. Had to practically drag her to a circus. Could be worse. Could be robot clowns. But that's another story.

That Loki fellow I keep hearing about was keeping watch MHA and chose sweet things over paperwork. Paperwork would be a lot more popular if it was sweet and edibile. Newcomer Ben came to look for an apartment, which he promised not to burn down. Funnily enough, newcomer Sarah promised that too. Is there a problem with buildings catching on fire? Maybe it's just peoples' cooking skills. No wonder the island can support so many restaurants. Before Daisy went off to save the world, she stopped to talk to Loki about dating police officers.

Newcomer Ben decided to celebrate his arrival in Fandom with coffee from the Perkolator. I know everyone calls it the Perk, but Perkolator is such a fun word to say. Perkolator. Where was I? Aha, Jamie thought he recognised Ben, but he's actually a spitting image of former student Peter Parker, who happens to be his cousin. Small universe. There was also Minsc and a highly caffeinated hyperactive hamster jumping around. That really needs no commentary.

Caritas was fairly quiet as everyone was at the wedding of the week. Chuck Bass, hey I know him, took his fake baby in an act of brilliant fake parenting. Peyton my TA went looking for something to drown her sorrows, Molly brought along her false offspring to keep Mr. Bass's company and Angela commiserated with Chuck over Mr. Cullen punishing his class with fake babies. Ahhh that explains it. Here I was thinking it was a new fad. If you think it's hard to believe, I have one word for you - Tamagotchi.

No clinic, although I assume it's still standing since I don't see any pictures of flames or exclamation marks on my notes. That just leaves the wedding of Vala Mal Doran and Barney Stinson.

The Wedding of Vala Mal Doran and Barney Stinson

It was in the park, in case you didn't go. Everyone dressed for the occasion. I have it on good authority that Toby even wore a shirt. Tony Stark, who apparently needs his surname mentioned, met newcomer Sarah. For those keeping track of such things, they now have a sushi date on Tuesday night. This despite Tony already having a plus one in the shape of Pepper Potts, who has a lovely alliterative name and probably likes sushi as well. Aly and Roy were at the wedding and opted to sit on the bride's side. This was before their behind closed doors activities that I mentioned earlier. I don't do things in chronological order.

Mingling seems to be what you do at weddings, and this one didn't disappoint. Toby complimented Constable Fraser on his choice of outfit and, in turn, Constable Fraser filled Toby in that Barney wasn't, in fact, marrying Tinker Bell. Lily and Marshall tried to prepare for the impending apocalypse that was meant to come with Barney getting married, Tyler indulged in a little drinking early on in the ceremony. Tony Stark, ever-eager to spread himself around from what these notes say, got Tyler to share and I think there might have been a marriage proposal by one to the other. Congratulations to the happy couple! Sarah might be disappointed though. Oh well, plenty of sushi to go around.

Vala had plenty of bridesmaids to fuss over her before the ceremony, including Miss Bennet, who didn't seem to be too pleased about the required uniform. Marion, on the other hand, took charge of any last minute organising. On the other side, Barney and his Best Bro Robin discussed the highs and lows of marriage and whether the world was going to end. Quite possibly, but I doubt Barney getting married will do it. Biff offered one final intervention, which the groom declined and deflected by pointing out to Biff that there were bridesmaids to court.

As with most weddings, there was a procession. Barney had wandering eyes even in the the last moments of bachelorhood, Biff escorted Miss Bennet and Robin and Marion couldn't decide who was escorting who. Next came the bride herself, radiant as ever. Biff officiated in...really? Biff officiated in Pig Latin. Oh good, he switched to English. Pig Latin isn't easy, you know. The vows weren't in Latin of any kind, but they're not exactly fit for public consumption, so buy a copy of the wedding video and find out for yourself if you're really that curious.

With all of the official stuff out of the way, it was time for the reception! Except, oh. Ohh. Vala didn't leave Barney at the altar. She waited, got married, then left him with the wedding cake and guests. Ouch. Miss Bennet consoled the poor groom, whereas Loki and Sokka revelled in a good dose of scheudenfraude. Despite the unfortunate turn of events, gifts of all shapes and sizes were left, and there was plenty of food and drink to go around.

Deadpool and Sokka discussed the importance of little drink umbrellas, Loki found booze and decided that Deadpool was a little odd. Just a little. Miss Bennet indulged in champagne and the amusement of Ronon Dex. Sokka moved on to get tipsy on champagne and admire Miss Bennet. Seems Miss Bennet was quite the popular lady tonight. Tyler admired her dress, offered to keep her upright despite the champagne, and then another fine gentleman Biff offered to keep her warm.

Ronon and Sokka took advantage of the free food, while Barney decided that Scotch and commiserating with a bridesmaid in an up close and personal fashion was on the cards for the rest of the evening. Sarah met both Barney and Biff, although neither seemed terribly surprised by the bride's disappearance. Daisy crashed the party for the drinks - really, it's half the reason for going to a party - and met Biff, who isn't the reason for going to a party but is a good source of information. In this case, he filled her in about impending divorce proceedings. Relationships move so fast these days.

The buffet was available for all of the guests, as was the dance floor and the usual chairs and tables where Best Bro Robin and Constable Fraser weren't terribly surprised about such a short-lived marriage.

I'm off to get leftover canapes. Congratulations and commiserations to the unhappy couple. To the rest of you, see you next week unless the world really does end. I hope it doesn't. I hate working on Sundays."
