Fandom Radio, Monday, January 1st
Okay, so I have no idea why all of the Earth holidays keep landing on my broadcast days, but I guess we're doing this, huh? Hey, Fandom. It's Kanan Jarrus, happy new year, and a welcome to all the new people who have only heard through word of mouth what it is they're in for from here on out.
I'm so sorry.
Anyway, the obligatory pile of notes has been shoved at me by the usual pack of squirrels, who are even more drunk today than usual - yes, that is a phrase I just said in all seriousness - and so I guess I'm going to have to read what half the island did last night so I can get on with my 2018.
Usually I start with notes in the dorms, which you'll all learn are my least favorite notes to read, because students do things in there that squirrels shouldn't be watching and please, new kids, if you're listening to this and you're planning on having a good time, consider sparing a broadcaster's sanity and bribe the squirrels to not stare at you while you strip naked and rub all up against one another, would you? They'll accept donations of rum.
But I'm not starting with those today, because I'm going to just slap all the parties together at the end of the broadcast, and you're going to have to deal with it. Don't worry, I'll be back to them in about three seconds. In town, Sparkle was texting to Atton at the Demon Marcus, Jono was playing guitar at Groovy Tunes, and Summer stopped by Luke's during my shift in order to give me a hard time about how I'm not teaching for her last semester. Nobody's missing out on much there, don't worry.
And now that I'm done reading the 'these people were all stupid enough to show up to work on a holiday' news, it's time for the parties.
Starting with, yes, the party that Summer threw in the second-floor common room of the dorms. It came with the requisite amount of mingling, which I'm going to take to mean 'any at all.' Summer asked Breq if they do the New Years thing where she's from. And then Breq asked Gratuity the same thing before they started talking about what classes they're taking this semester. Peridot let Summer hold her Pumpkin, which I guess is a thing the kids are doing these days, and Breq and Norman introduced themselves to one another and talked about how he's the new kid. Just wait until classes start, kids. It'll be a solid week of introducing yourselves before you're allowed to get back to your lives already.
Norman and Gratuity talked a bit about how they weren't sure Norman would come to the party at all before the conversation turned toward death. Great party topic there, new kid. Summer offered him a party hat, but he settled for a noisemaker. The squirrels think it's because of his hair. What about the hair, the notes don't say. Breq and Theron agreed to skip the new kid small talk and instead talked about Breq's enjoyment of music, and Summer was mostly just happy to see him there. Gratuity approved of Summer's decorating choices and was offered some jello mold in return. Did anybody save me some? And then Paris made Summer check if the party hats were actually for this year, or if they were last year's clearance. I'd say that was kind of rude, but I'd probably be the guy who went with the clearance stuff if I ever stuck around a place long enough to give a kriff.
Summer asked Peebee if she'd vanished for the semester or was just hiding away somewhere studying the whole time, and Peebee admitted that she took off to explore. So, welcome back, Peebee. You didn't miss much. Some trauma. I'm jealous. Yang showed up with the boozy stuff, which Peebee was immediately interested in, there were food and drinks, and, of course, the inevitable countdown, which means I can move on to the next party now, so help me.
Next one was the all-day number that went on at 33 Apocalypse, which I'm conditioned to dread for the same reason I dread the dorms, honestly. In the morning, it was breakfast and Christmas action movies. And Ezra and Dante having a conversation about -- I'm not reading that on the air, guys. Just because you wrote it down doesn't mean it's everyone's business, karking hell. At least Dante's conversation with Anders was just about the explosions on the television. I can live with that. Ada was thrilled about the explosions, which meant Dante couldn't pass up some classic double entendre, and Dante made an unfortunate food dare with Isabela that would have wasted perfectly good rum and cereal. The rest of the day was mostly about weird donut things and comedies on Netflix, and then came the midnight countdown thing, which led to Kathy asking about resolutions, Anders and Dante showing up to work on a three way midnight kiss, and Ada resolving to be a terrible influence on everyone she knows. Looks like she'll have to get in line with Isabela, who is resolving to spend more time in the company of pretty boys and girls, a resolution that ends in-- guys. Bribing! With rum! Please!
I'm going to need rum just to pour over my eyes, if I keep reading broadcasts about what people are doing in that house.
Anyway, on to the final party, which was over at 29 Chimera, for a slightly more adult crew. Thank you, the universe can indeed be merciful. There was arriving and mingling, or mingling, anyway, since most of the folks at the party already lived there. Nathan and Miguel talked about their plans for the new year, which mostly just involved staying alive. Good resolution right there. I'm going to make that one mine, too. Nathan and Mitsutada discussed Mitsutada's cooking and something about swords? I'm not sure the squirrels wrote this note down right. Amaya and Nathan chatted about his roommates, and Miguel welcomed her to the party and confirmed that New Years is about ringing in the new...year. Good to have that one cleared up, I guess. And in the kitchen, Miguel and Mitsutada talked about soba, cut fruit, and shared their plans for the new year.
Heh. Plans for the new year. There's a topic I never really give much thought to. And that's all the notes, so... I don't know. My first plan for the new year is to walk the dog and then go back to bed. Until next week, Fandom.
