Fandom Radio - Newbie Day O' Doom Edition - January 3, 2009

"Hello. Edmund Pevensie here. I don't normally do these broadcasts, but the squirrels were desperate and it's a big day, so it would have been rude of me to say no.

Welcome Picnic

It's a big day because of the new arrivals. Let's see if I can make some sense of this. The new students met their big siblings. Edward met Angela, Claudia met Toby, Arthur was a prat to Chad (I'm just reading the notes, Arthur, no offense intended), Adora and Blair were kindred spirits and Blair was kind enough to take Adora, who's royalty apparently, under her wing. Emmett met professional big brother Dean, and someone named Priestly met his new big sister Alice. Arthur's manservant Merlin, really? Er, Merlin met his new sibling Hannibal. Sookie - am I saying that properly? Let me know if we meet - she met Tahiri. Zayne has a new big brother in Tony, who kindly explained that Fandom is very, very complicated. Eowyn, another lady whose pronunciation I'm unsure of, please forgive me for any mistakes, discussed talking horses with Meg. Gabriel was a bit abrupt with his sibling, Buffy, but she didn't seem to take too much offense. Leto was introduced to Fandom's ways by Lion-o. Dinah's big brother Jamie showed off by making copies of himself to sing for her. Harper wasn't able to meet Hurley right away, but his mouse droid - I'm not sure what that is - and directed her in the right direction. K-Mart was able to find Summer and Jill was found by Romeo, rounding up the big sibling news for now.

Next we have the roommate meetings, otherwise known as the part where people find out who they're stuck sharing their personal space with for a few months. I'm actually in this bit. Dinah wasn't terribly pleased with having a male roommate, namely Chad. If it helps any, I've only heard good things. Edward didn't find out about his roommate, but he was thrilled to have a room at all. Adora and Spirit met Dor. They seemed somewhat embarrassed about each other. I'm just glad my roommate's not a lady. No offense, but it's awkward. Merlin found that Cal was his roommate. Priestly found Naomi a good conversation partner, which is pretty good for a roommate. Tony was glad to hear his roommate K-Mart is from Earth. Worf was all business with Sookie. Claudia and Zayne planned their decorations. Claudia is also under the impression that a lightsaber is a part of the anatomy. Jill and Harper were surprised, but pleased to meet each other. Arthur and Leto, who are both royal apparently - weren't on the best of terms. Maybe we should start a club. Oh, and I met Reno, my new roommate. Well, met as in said hello for the first time. We were in a class together before.

The students weren't the only ones meeting and greeting. The faculty did as well. Captain Hammer learned from Vice Principal Deadpool that abuse of students isn't appropriate. Not physical, anyway. Professor Jameson and Deadpool argued over costumes and bad hair. Professor Yzma met Professor Dex and was quite pleased with what she saw. Professor Minsc introduced himself to Professor Algren and there was talk of dragons. Constable Fraser and Principal Winchester were in attendance as well. Professor Atreides was surprised to see Leto there and spoke to him in an unfamiliar language. Professor Bennet filled Professor Whitaker in on the Fandom basics. Professor Aldrin was also there, but no word on if she spoke to anyone. Professor Winchester mistook Captain Hammer for another Captain she knows, while Sokka asked about why the Captain didn't have a proper costume. Professor Durden was sceptical about teaching students to be heroes as the Captain insisted he could. Professor Jameson wasn't pleased to be here according to the squirrels, and Professor Algren was confused about his surroundings.. Professor Skywalker wasn't hiding, at all. Professor Yzma was pleased to make Professor Minsc's acquaintance. Professors Durden and Algren traded stories and Professor Bennet reassured Professor Algren, Professor Garrett brought her dog and Professor Suresh was very interested in his coffee.

Okay, that's the formalities done with. There are still a lot of notes to go. How do people do this every week? Or for a better question, why? Do you really want to know that Chad was playing his guitar on a picnic table, that he and Teddy talked about today being their last picnic and that Chad is thinking of coming back to teach? Sorry. Whether you wanted to know or not, now you do. Chad did some other things as well, one being that he told Brooke where to find Arthur. Dean met Priestly, who looks exactly like him, and explained about doubles and demons. Ino and Priestly compared arms. Priestly met Amber and thought all of her explanations about Fandom were codewords. Peyton thought Priestly was Dean and tried to kiss him. That's unfortunate. For Peyton, I mean, not Priestly. Cal didn't notice the similarity between Priestly and Dean, but Brooke did and they talked about Peyton and home. Kaylee on the other hand, thought Priestly looked like Alec.

Prince Edward was looking for Giselle. Wait. Lady Giselle? He's that Edward? Oh. Er. Lee wasn't particularly helpful in Edward's search. Adora offered to help Edward, who was pleased to meet a Princess. Is every new student a member of a royal family this time? Turtle tried to charge Edward for her help. Edward then found Jaina and wanted to know why she wasn't married. Dinah fights evil, which led to both of them going to find drinks. I'm not sure of the logic, but I'm beginning to think logic has no place here. There might be another case of double confusion, because Jamie confused Edward for someone named Scott. Claudia didn't confuse him for anyone, but her outfit did cause Edward some distress.

Another of our new royals, Arthur, was sitting off to the side with his food. He didn't really like Ino and told her to go away. Angela came to his aid and reassured him that while he didn't want to be away from his duties, he was needed here. Chuck, who isn't sharing a room with my sister anymore and never will again, was hospitable and shared his rum with Arthur. Jaina and Arthur tried to reconcile their differences. Namely, the age-old confusion between people who come from space and those who live in castles. Arthur didn't like Kaylee either, because she wouldn't stop talking. I'm getting the impression that Arthur doesn't like anyone, and that the feeling will eventually become mutual if he continues on like this. Arthur and Merlin were reunited and feeling very out of place. You get used to it. Blair introduced herself to Arthur as the Queen of the Upper East Side. Brooke tried to get Arthur shirtless. I don't think that's going to work. Turtle made a deal with Arthur, which she backed out on, meaning Arthur was bothered. Again.

There's more. We're not even close to being done with the picnic, let alone the rest of what happened today. Toby was shirtless, which is no surprise, but he did walk around with a name tag stuck to his chest. I wonder what he'd do with a medal. Ender watched people from over on the grass. Angela was eager to meet new people, and spoke to Peyton about Dean's stepmother being an alien. Wait, that would mean - nevermind. She also spoke to Chuck who isn't sharing a room with my sister ever again about her little sibling trying to give her orders. Blair and Angela discussed prospects amongst the new ladies. Ino was hyperactive.

John was enjoying the food. He spoke to fellow senior Rikku about this being their last welcome picnic. Jaina told him about one of the new people trying to marry them off. Three guesses who that was. The first two don't count. Teddy was tired, but came anyway. Hinata and Jack greeted each other. Amber was excited to meet new people, and Jack made sure to say hello to her. Penelope spent most of her time near a tree. Dean may have been a semester late, but he told Penelope all about invasions. People also turn into horses. Penelope and Peyton talked about Dean, while Jack tried to console Penelope about there being new people about.

Ned did his best not to look too nervous, whereas Hannibal had no problem with his confidence levels. Ino convinced Hannibal to take his shirt off, as is tradition, and discussed some misguided attempts at flirting. Hannibal tried to press Teddy into streaking, but he didn't cave to peer pressure. Peyton couldn't pass up the opportunity to flirt with Hannibal and neither could Chuck who...well, you know the rest by now. It seems that Hannibal was the man of the moment. Brooke flirted too. Dean helped himself to free food. Peyton joined him shortly after.

Jess wasn't feeling very talkative, but ended up making a deal with Angela about mutual shirtlessness. Is there something in the water today? Peyton offered to sketch Jess, and Brooke succeeded where Angela failed. Perhaps it's in the air instead.

Lee was out mingling before he ran into Edward. Ino convinced him to take his shirt off. Another one! He and Helen spoke of getting out more. Gavin was also about, enjoying food. Gavin and Leto are doubles and ran into each other. It turns out Leto is Professor Atreides' brother. Adora and Spirit were confused about the trees. I know. They don't talk. It's weird. Ned spoke to Adora about the trees and why they were confusing, and managed to insult Spirit. By accident, I'm sure. Ah, I see. Adora thought the trees were diseased, but Chad assured her that wasn't the case. Adora and Buffy talked of Jan the unicorn and fighting evil. Eowyn and Adora discussed boys without shirts. It seems to be a hot topic today. And Adora and Turtle talked of name origins and what turtles are.

These notes never end. Turtle was sipping her drink while she sized up the new people. Chuck who you know the rest was approached by Blair and they discussed new family arrangements. Emmett spent his time in the shadows. Helen introduced him to the concept of new worlds. Buffy commiserated with him about crowds and being from small towns. Peyton continued her search for boys minus their shirts. Warren and Anemone hid up in a tree. Lois talked to John about shirtlessness, which she intended to join in on in an effort to make everyone blush. You've succeeded, Lois. Harvey was there representing the Student Council. Cal was approached by Ino, who had a few choice words to say about someone she didn't have a good conversation with. Again, three guesses. Merlin spoke to Tony of welcomes and magic, Turtle says hello and found out that Merlin is from Albion.

Dojima and Rikku traded Christmas stories. Meg and Peyton did the same. Sookie was doing her best to blend in. Dean explained Priestly and doubles to her. Emmett and Sookie seem to know each other, and were both surprised by the size of the crowd and the school being a castle. Jamie seems very confused today. First Edward, now Sookie, who he mistook for Marie or Rogue. Turtle learned about where Sookie comes from and how there are vampires. Kaylee tried to make her cheerfulness infectious and spoke to Leto. Merlin learned the way to the stables from Aravis, who informed her that royal rank doesn't matter here. Perhaps it's not Merlin she should be talking to, if these notes are any indication. Buffy spent her time in between mingling quietly.

Jaina and Tahiri were glad that no more relatives from their home have shown up. Brooke looked around for new people to introduce herself to. Jaina honed in on Zayne, and they learned of mutual Jediness. I don't actually know if that's a word. At this point, my throat is getting sore from talking and we're not even close to being done, so please just assume it's a word for today. Turtle spoke with Zayne also, but they aren't from the same galaxy.

Katina spent her time out of the way. Hoshi did too, but spoke with Jack. Harry was there for the food. Eowyn and Aravis bonded over their mutual love of horses. Turtle was very impressed by Eowyn's name, and Alice by Eowyn's hair. Harper was also interested in the food. It was quite the feast. Ino learned that Harper was here on Parents Weekend and liked it so much she begged to come back. Turtle received the same background story when she asked.

Dinah tried to cope with Fandom shock by indulging in some fruit punch. I don't think it's that kind of punch. Merlin has the unfortunate fate of being on the receiving end of Dinah's coping. Ino tried to console her. Turtle followed suit. Claudia went straight for the junk food and stunned Fandom with her fashion choices. Priestly introduced her to the idea of doubles, which he himself is new to. Kaylee gushed over Claudia's clothes, which Rikku echoed shortly after. Turtle added Claudia to her round of introductions, as she did with Leto.

Leto also met Jaina, who asked if he'd met Gavin yet because they look so similar. Wait. Gavin's the one who looks like Mr Tumnus, so now Mr Tumnus has two doubles. Or a double and a triple. Does anyone else get a headache from all this? It surely can't be just me. Chuck who you know the rest and Blair discussed the potential or lack thereof amongst the newcomers. Potential for what I'm not entirely sure. Jack and Naomi said hello to each other in the crowd. Sokka balanced food and boomerang tricks, and then received a visit from Rikku who wanted to thank him for catsitting.

K-Mart and Turtle bonded over disliking their first names. Buffy checked in to see how K-Mart was doing with her first day. Rikku helped herself to some of the food and drink all the while bouncing, which takes quite a bit of skill. Alex and Naomi were also on the lookout for new people to talk to.

Oh [microphone feedback], there's another few pages of picnic notes. Sorry about that, I don't know why the microphone screeched like that. We're still at the picnic, for those keeping track. There were plenty of trees around for people thankfully, because Romeo was resting near one as well. Ino stopped by him to discuss Ichigo being a fox and new students, who haven't been foxes. Yet. Romeo and Triela swapped tales of their Christmas break. Claire carried her camera around and Triela offered to pose. Triela then spoke to Ino about her arm, I'm not sure whose arm, and Ino was still on the lookout for people to talk to.

Another tree! Viki under a tree in this case. Priestly managed to keep mingling, but he did add in a 'Not Dean' to his nametag. He let Claire take his picture. Turtle introduced him to the idea of jello dragons. Summer was at the picnic as well. She talked to Angela, who still isn't happy with Three Guesses who tried to boss her around. Emmett, who was still in the shadows, spoke to Claire who was able to take a photo of him. Triela teased him about being afraid of crowds. Ino thought he was a spy, but Emmett insists he's not. He was, however, undecided on whether Turtle's name was that of a celebrity or an old woman. Neither in this case.

Triela was off to look for more people to chat to. Marco was more interested in the food. Arthur was still around, eating and making himself known to all and sundry. Claire wanted to take his picture, but there was a misunderstanding about what a camera was and how someone could shoot someone else with a box. Arthur charmed Triela with his personality, but she didn't seem to mind. Dor was a little shocked by the day's events, but Priestly reassured him that having a lady as a roommate wasn't bad. It's not, as long as you behave honourably, otherwise you may find yourself in quite an amount of trouble.

Amber enjoyed a sandwich and told Triela of her date with Priestly. And...more on that subject of doing things with Priestly, but I'm not reading that out. Katina was still sketching later in the day, and spoke to Triela about...monkeys? Monkeys apparently. Cal still did his best to lurk. Claire wandered over to talk to him about being social, photography and Penelope being engaged. Jaina told Cal she was pleased no more relatives arrived in Fandom. Claire tried to get Edward's picture and did, but not before he called her a peasant, a rude word he learned from Lee and a fisherman. He then did the same, minus the fisherman, to Ino. Zayne and Edward then became fast friends while looking for Lady Giselle.

Agnes did her best to look intimidating. Priestly told her he thought people would be shocked by his appearance. She countered with talking animals. That says it all really. Merlin complimented Agnes' hat, enjoyed a drink and learned of cameras and photography from Claire. Amber introduced herself and discussed what being a manservant means, while Buffy taught him about television and iPods.

Ned was very glad to see that Sookie didn't have a talking horse. What's wrong with having a talking horse? Sookie then told Claire about vampires and her world. Angela helped Sookie realise that she's a time traveller - you get used to it, I'm saying that a lot, aren't I? - and Buffy discusses with Sookie the plight of having odd names. Kaylee and K-Mart bonded over fresh fruit, which they don't have where each of them comes from. Triela then spoke to Kaylee about learning how to talk to people in an appropriate way. Aravis told Triela of her attempts to reacquaint herself with parties.

Zayne's clothing was familiar to Tahiri, who apologised to him for him not being the first Jedi on the planet. Claire took Zayne's picture in an effort to get to art school. Adora and Zayne discussed how nice but strange Fandom people are. Ichigo and Triela met, possibly for the first time. Marco was in an opera at home, as he told Turtle. No, sorry, not an opera. What's an Oprah?

Adora was without her horse, who must be Spirit if I'm reading right. I'm onto the last page of picnic notes! Almost there! Harper found Alex, Penelope continued to watch from afar and Adam and Alice followed suit!

Done! Yes. We're going to take a break while I get a drink. Let's put some music on. Do I just press this button?

[Rob Thomas - Ever the Same plays]

I'm back, and my throat isn't as dry now. There are still plenty of notes to go, but that's all for the picnic.

Elsewhere on Campus

Rikku came back from a trip home to find that her roommate has gone. I came back to find that I'm living on an entirely different floor with another person. Today's full of surprises. Merlin went to his room after the picnic and lit candles until Cal, his roommate, introduced him to the lightswitch. Dor and Adora, who I hadn't realised have similar names, went to their room to discover that they now had bunk beds.

The socialising didn't end with the picnic. Plenty of people piled into a common room as well this evening. The Fourth Floor Common Room, actually, where Sookie was making jambalaya and berry cobbler. Hurley introduced himself and they made small talk. Priestly followed his nose in and impressed Hurley with his hair and kilt. Sookie let Priestly help cook and they discussed their problems with dopplegangers today. Romeo introduced himself and asked Priestly if his name implied something, which led to a chat about religion. Anemone asked if Priestly's hair was naturally blue. It's not.

Amber came in looking for food as well and found some, which she ate while talking to Priestly. Amber and Romeo caught up on the day's events. Marco cheerfully joined the cook-up. Romeo complimented the chef and was offered food as a result. Seregil also arrived, having missed the picnic and was greeted by Priestly, but Marco was too busy with food to say hello straight away.

Anemone asked after food and what was on the television, to which Romeo offered her the remote control. Triela asked the same question and started a conversation about show tastes before being offered jambalaya by Sookie. Harper and Sookie met for the first time, and she also met Amber, who was very welcoming. Jaina came in to ask if the food was a friend-making attempt, but it turns out it's because Sookie is homesick. It happens to the best of us, Lady Sookie. Jaina joined Anemone in her efforts to find something good to watch. Robin came in not long after, asking Anemone how her break was and causing much confusion for Priestly and Sookie.

Town

Loki spent some time avoiding new people by hiding out in his apartment. His efforts weren't successful, because Daisy stopped in with a plant. Professor Rogers returned to town and met an old friend, Tony Stark.

Viki opened the Arms Hotel and worked until Mary showed up so she could go to the picnic. Jen opened Pizza Planet and skipped the picnic. Juno worked on her communications device at The Gig. Tully brought fruit and vegetables for his horse, Mr Twain. Hurley was disappointed at having to work at Groovy Tunes until his little sibling Harper came to visit him. Rusty waited at MCA to see if anyone new needed an apartment, which Professor Rogers did. Robin also skipped the picnic in order to work at The Android's Dungeon.

Marion was in the back room while Tino was bartending at Caritas this evening. Mina was the only customer listed here for the night, but there may have been more after the squirrels moved on. And lastly, freedom sweet freedom after this, the Clinic was opened by the nurses during the day and Ino in the evening.

That's it. That's the end of the notes. I'm done. I'm leaving. If you ever see squirrels coming after you with what looks like a book-sized pile of notes, run far, far away.
