Denizens of Fandom, what's up? That was "Restless" by Sleater-Kinney, the actual greatest Pacific Northwest band of all time, no, I will not be hearing arguments at this time. Or ever. Steph here, bringing you the best of this week's sweet Monday squirrel gossip.
*chittering*
Wait, what?
*chittering*
... it has been brought to my attention by Leroy that I missed a few notes last week, and that I should blame the intern porg for this. Actually, what happened was that I put my iced coffee down on them and the ink all ran, so that was totally my bad. Apologies, everybody, I'll try not to let that happen again, but, y'know... no guarantees.
*trilling*
Aw. You're my favorite, intern porg. Let's see if it stays that way. Anyway, on to the School notes!
Leading off the day, Summer and Stark set the Intro to Fandom students loose in the preserve with cameras and field guides, to take pictures of our very unique local flora and fauna. My friend Ryan would probably approve in principle, but the last time I tried to tell him about the teal deer he sent me like five texts full of keysmashing and crying emoji, so who knows? Non-Deadly Heroics had that perennial classic, a movie day, in which they got to watch a bunch of badass women pull off a heist. Yep, that movie totally counts as heroics if you ask me. Fight Stuff got to fight... ninja astronauts, which sounds amazing. Yes, even with the spacesuits on. Anakin, meanwhile, threw the Diplomacy class right into the deep end, which is to say they had to negotiate between his kids as to who got to pick what to watch on TV. Dude. That is no joke.
Nothing in the Dorms, so on to Town.
Everything was 25 percent off for Labor Day at Turtle and Canary, where Goose came in to interrupt Summer from her multitasking by telling her about a phone call home and possible Parents' Weekend visits. Sakaki ended up playing traffic cop at Furnado, because the rats were driving little cars around and please tell me there are at least pictures? I need to see what tiny rodent gridlock looks like. Over at Diaz & Ass, which is my privilege to get to say on the air, Rosa the first found people being wrong on the Internet and could not let that stand.
Barbecue-themed pizzas were on special at Pizza Planet, by which I mean, like, burgers and hot dogs and ribs. Oh, short ribs. In related news, I am regretting not having a sudden pizza craving yesterday. Vi had her hands full, in between cleaning up the mess that the ticklemonsters -- probably, though we're not ruling out gremlins or anything -- left at Magpie Emporium, and putting up with me. Connor was at the museum reading up on the local plant life, and Cutter came to check the place and also catch Connor up on how he's been settling in so far. Speaking of plants, Nell was giving the ones at Covent Garden Flowers a little extra TLC. Liz came to talk to her about rough anniversaries -- I am way too familiar with those -- and found out that it's Nell's last shift, because she's headed home. Damn. You know, they say flowers can help ease the blow of rough news, so... that's convenient? Maybe?
That was not, however, the big news of yesterday. That? Was the Labor Day beach party which was held at, you guessed it, the beach. Steve McG. set that one up, with plenty of food for grilling and also a bonfire for people to get rid of those memorable and occasionally eye-searing shirts from the summer's Wednesday shenanigans. You know, if they so chose. I, personally, have an emotional attachment to my space cats shirt and will not be getting rid of it.
*chittering*
Quiet, Leroy.
Anyway, people showed up to hang out, as tends to be the case at parties. McSteve and Diego talked haircuts and wedding planning, Steven-with-an-N and Watts got all sentimental about the shirts they wouldn't be burning, awww, Jane found out she looks exactly like Jaina's grandmother, and also about Jaina's granddaughter being here for a while. In related news, I am now throwing out everything I thought I knew about the space-time continuum. Stark caught up with Steven after all of last week's eventfulness, mostly the baggage, which seriously sucked. Jane asked Stark about his burger planet shirt and showed him her -- uh --
*chittering*
Oh, it's a literal magic hammer. That helps her maintain her perfect hair. Gotcha.
Margo was dressed to impress, which isn't actually news although the squirrels inform me it is always noteworthy, and asked Jane how Fandom weird stacks up to weird-from-home. She also caught up with Stark and congratulated him on... not bleeding all over the sand? Sure. Annie and Diego decided that choosing to get married in the fall, when it's significantly less gross out, was smart of them. This is true. Back in Haven Springs, tourists kept wanting to do these, like, super outdoorsy rustic mountain weddings and then it was just bug bites everywhere, because summertime will always find a way to be gross even if there isn't sand involved. Irene gave Watts some suggestions on possible modern fashion choices, Watts and Stark talked about what a Choice those shirts were even if they weren't going to be burning any themselves, Raiden immediately lost his shirt and offered Jane some of the pizza he brought, tried to explain murder mystery dinner parties to Watts -- dude, that is totally a thing that needs to happen. Steven met Raiden, and after the whole how've-you-been-settling-in thing they talked about pizza, food in general, and also dietary preferences. Raiden also met Stark and invited him to come check out Pizza Planet.
*trilling*
I am being informed that this was an ongoing theme with him and it was a legit invitation, not some tacky advertising thing. Summer and Stark pondered the important question of whether it counts as a party without jello. The squirrels are not providing me with a conclusive answer, however. Will was dressed normally, much to Leroy's judgey disappointment, and gave not-the-new-Eddie a drink as an apology for all the horrible shirts he keeps donating to Buck. McSteve was also super disappointed in Will's boring shirt, and Stark assured Will that he hasn't lost his arm yet. Anakin was glad to see Jaina back and they were relieved to know things are a lot calmer this week than they were last week. Aren't we all.
Anakin showed up with way too much eye-searing excess polyblend, which totally understandably had Jane concerned. Raiden was stoked to find out Anakin had one in his size -- Raiden, no -- and Stark probably futilely suggested that maybe if Anakin doesn't keep ordering terrible shirts, he won't get trapped in his office by the surplus. Charlie got busted by Steve for trying to swipe a beer. Dude, you know someone was going to try.
Also? There was a ton of food. Danny ran a serious risk of getting a charcoal burger by trying to help Steve with the grilling.
*chittering, with one half-second-late trill*
Okay, he was being a brat about it but I maintain that is a totally valid way of helping. Scott met Steven, and super-nerdy Egyptology talk ensued, and Raiden introduced himself to Steve McG. when he came to drop off the pizzas.
Much fun was had, and hopefully not too much sand in uncomfortable places. Unless that's your thing.
Finally, it is very important that I let you all know what the latest crab-related developments at the clinic are. Are you sitting down for this? Yes? Good.
Stabby has a new hat. Also, Stark might be in a little trouble with the nurses after getting himself injured last week and dude. This is me, side-eyeing you.
And that concludes my notes for the day. Until next Tuesday, Fandom, this is Steph, leaving you with this to ponder: ticklemonster versus ceiling cat. Who wins?
