Fandom Radio, Sunday, January 6th
Jessica: And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when a couple of random people found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, Coulson & Drew: Agents of RADIO was born—to report the news no single random person could manage! Heed the call, then—for now, Coulson & Drew Assemble!
Coulson: ...
Jessica: Come on, that was a good opening.
Coulson: For the record, I'm not a random person. I'm in the squirrels' union. I'm a squirrel reservist.
Jessica: And here I thought I'd be the wacky one on the team. Anyway, it looks like there wasn't anyone scheduled, so the squirrels picked me pretty much out of nowhere and my new bestie Phil here to do the whole reporting what everyone did yesterday thing which is, in fact, a thing we do around here, thanks for listening, new people.
Coulson: It's not as creepy as she makes it sound.
Jessica: You're a squirrel man. We can't trust your opinion. Stick to the facts.
Coulson: If you insist. Let's start with town matters and keep the picnic until the end.
Jessica: Fine by me, especially since you're going to read those. You're involved in most of the notes anyway.
Coulson: If you insist. Cafe Luke's was open for business and new hires today. No word on if Mr Priestly found anyone yet, but we wish him the best of luck in his endeavors. Meanwhile, I was at MCA, the apartment building I now manage. A Mr John Constantine, the new school librarian, came in looking for a place to live. We came to an agreement and he moved in.
Jessica: Seriously? That's your wacky radio thing?
Coulson: Not really, no. I wasn't trying for wacky.
Jessica: We really should have talked about this more before the show. Around the school and dorms but not dealing with the picnic, new girl Kate Bishop was eaten by a locker and wow that's a thing that happens? What?
Coulson: I still have nightmares about that from my school days.
Jessica: And now so will I. Um, hopefully the police or an intrepid janitor can do something about that. Oh, what's this, a squirrel is handing Coulson a note.
Coulson: It says, 'This kind of thing used to happen all the time. She'll be fine in a few days.'
Jessica: Okay, whew. I had a lot of comedy bits planned and I'm not sure it would have gone over well if we didn't know she'd be fine.
Coulson: We're not doing bits.
Jessica: You're not doing bits. But you can't stop me.
Coulson: We'll see.
Jessica: Anyway, Jimmy Kirk and Ulrik hung out on the second floor, watching movies and probably braiding each others' hair and stuff.
Coulson: And without further ado --
Jessica: Ado! ADO!
Coulson: *sigh* News from the Welcome Picnic. Let's start with the arranged meetings. First, siblings. Tony couldn't see or find his little brother, Jack, who was invisible. But not so invisible that the squirrels couldn't make not of him. Remember that, Mr Frost. Jeremy perhaps went slightly overboard when he introduced himself to Karina with a bow, but she seemed receptive to that kind of formality. Evan and Po bonded over people having powers and how to classify such people. And Fandom got a glimpse of dinosaur pet-hood when Hanna met Get and her dinosaur, Old Lace.
Jessica: Karla wasted no time breaking brains by explaining everything that's weird as succinctly as possible to Bay. Stiles and Charley didn't seem to appreciate each others' names. Alec couldn't find Kate because she was off being locker-chow. Emily asked for the low-down on this crazy place from Victor. And Maddie looked for big sis Shira. And now, half of the people we just mentioned needed to talk to each other or yet more people, because it was time for roommates!
Coulson: Jack continued to have trouble being seen, this time by his roommate, Charley.
Jessica: That's gonna go well.
Coulson: Hopefully Charley is listening right now. Emily and Karina didn't seem to have any issues with each other, although an obvious issue cropped up for Gert and Maddie.
Jessica: Where the dinosaur sleeps?
Coulson: Exactly. Bay met her roommate, Topher--
Jessica: Oh god.
Coulson: --which is apparently bad news for her. Sholeh was a deer, which made her introduction to Po slightly difficult. And Evan was unable to locate Kate.
Jessica: Who was gobbled up by a locker.
Coulson: Yes.
Jessica: Gobbled.
Coulson: Yes.
Jessica: By a locker.
Coulson: Truly, a terrible first day for her.
Jessica: I'm just sayin', I'd be transferring to Barry Plodder's school the second I got out of there, and that school's not even real.
Coulson: Really?
Jessica: All you have to do is tie the application and cover letter to an owl's leg and let it go. I'm sure it'll work out from there.
Coulson: Please just read the teacher notes.
Jessica: You need more magic in your heart, Phil.
Coulson: I'll try to find some while you're reading.
Jessica: I'll know if you don't. Okay, so, Josh Lyman had a meeting with my favorite brain breaker and yours, Pinkie Pie. God bless you, Mr Lyman. Karina and Pinkie ended up checking if each other were real, but to be fair, they were asking biased parties. And Maddie got the full-on Pinkie experience which, sadly, does not include a ride around the park.
Dean Skywalker assumed Mr Starsmore had been in a barfight, but no, the real answer was less pleasant. Starsmore also gave Mr Priest some teaching advice, which was mostly ragging on teenagers and their refusal to listen to authority figures.
Coulson: Fair.
Jessica: I'm not listening to you, Phil. Navaan wanted to play doctor with Mr Starsmore, but I honestly don't know if it's a euphemism. Dean Skywalker was happy to see Principal Zoe Winchester come back. And Natalie was encouraged by the fact that Mr Lyman has taught in Fandom before.
Coulson: Zoe and Steve discussed time differences --
Jessica: I swear your eyes lit up when you read Mr Rogers' name.
Coulson: DEREK TOLD JAYE about how he ended up teaching with Pinkie.
Jessica: You didn't have to raise your voice.
Coulson: I think I did. Jack Priest was surprised that Derek was even at the picnic. Jaina and Clint discussed their classes and how to deal with teenagers.
Jessica: Speaking o--
Coulson: No jokes about Ms Pryde's age, thank you. They're a good pair. Karla told Jack that she wasn't taking his class about how much gossip she received about him from Emma. Natalie gave Clint a belated Christmas gift and didn't answer questions about her break. And Kaidan discovered that being John Constantine's teaching buddy might take a bit of work.
Jessica: And with all of the necessary introductions out of the way, it was off to the mingling fields for optional introductions.
Coulson: Mercy and Arietty discussed the size challenges Arietty faces. And it seems Atton and Sia discussed you.
Jessica: Oh god, in what context?
Coulson: Mostly how your presence keeps him from being happily pantless.
Jessica: ... Well, I'm putting that on my resume.
Coulson: See that you do. After this, and without your knowledge of the previous conversation, you harassed Atton about drinking at the picnic, even though it was water.
Jessica: I just assumed he was trying to deal with the horror of having to wear pants.
Coulson: You were wrong. Natalie accused Peter of having ulterior motives for being at the picnic. Yeul frightened Liara by approaching while she was reading. Cade was unreceptive to Mercy asking him about his holidays, primarily because they don't celebrate such holidays in his galaxy. Gert picked up some food thieving tips from Cade. And according to this note--
Jessica: Lies. Cade and I talked about new people and how I'm gonna be cooler than him. Rilla was out with her adorable little kid, but she was still prepared to shock, SHOCK Karina with a little 'I'm from 1915.' I met Emily and gave her what I hope will end up being useful information about dealing with Fandom. And Gert proved to be popular, but I think we can credit that in part to Old Lace. No offense to Gert.
Coulson: None taken, I'm sure. Petra checked in to make sure Old Lace wasn't a student. Karina told Gert about Pinkie Pie. Gert and Ms Drew here argued about bunk beds. Ulrik couldn't get over the dinosaur. Victor was awkward around Gert for some reason. And Po didn't seem entirely comfortable with the dinosaur despite Gert's assurances that there would be no maulings.
Jessica: Old Lace almost ate Ikol, pet bird of Loki, but that led to talking about people they know from their crazy superhero universes.
Coulson: Like the ones we come from.
Jessica: Yep. Old Lace also tried to eat Stiles's puppy, so I think this is just a lesson. KEEP YOUR PETS AWAY FROM THE DINOSAUR. I can't believe that's not obvious. Fortunately, the puppy didn't get eaten because Sia had to aww at him.
Coulson: Charley had you asking about the state of his brain after being in Fandom for this short time, but perhaps you should have waited until after Rilla mistook him for someone else. Natalie and Jace were excited they didn't have to deal with siblings this semester.
Jessica: Maddie and I talked about alternate worlds and superheroes and stuff, which was lighter than the discussion she and Bay had about potential death by dinosaur roommate. Speaking of Bay, Billy apologized to her in advance about Topher. Mercy and Po talked about the weather. And Little Boy Invisible got to experience Minako's epic freak out about missing half the semester. But at least she could see him? But she wouldn't be the last.
Coulson: In fact, Mr Frost was rather popular despite being in a tree, a location that Mercy questioned. Loki asked if he was dead. Karla was excited that stop-motion animation didn't lie to her. And Anna didn't get why he was so surprised by any of this.
Jessica: Karla was mean and told Minako about her missed final when she was already mid-freakout. Mercy checked in to see how Lucrezia was doing. Emily made some eyes at Atton and, more specifically, his disguised water bottle. Karla checked in with Cade, now a veteran of Fandom picnics. And Lucrezia asked Rilla for an update on her kid's age.
Coulson: Karla was also excited to see Old Lace with Gert, who was also a conversation point between Topher and Victor. Lucrezia mistook Po for someone else. And--
Jessica: Toby was amused by the amount of food Po was taking, sorry, I wanted the last note.
Coulson: You could have just asked.
Jessica: That would have been terrible radio
Coulson: And you think we just did good radio?
Jessica: I think we just did the best radio. Enough to be Agents of RADIO.
Coulson: Just say goodbye, Ms Drew.
Jessica: Goodbye, Ms Drew!
Coulson: ...
