Fandom Radio, Tuesday, January 1st

Morning, new year, and I might very well be the only person in America who isn't hung over. The squirrels certainly are. Didn't even come to th'Boards this morning to check into why I'm so bloody late today.

It's the New Year. I reserve the right to be late if I want.

So, I'm going to ring in th'start of 2013 by reading the last notes of 2012, starting with what happened on Sunday, and moving on to what happened yesterday. Not that I expect anybody on the island to be awake to hear these yet, but I did make my way all th'way here, I suppose I might as well grace you all with the sound of my voice one more time before the broadcaster changing of th'guard, hm?

Not that much did happen on Sunday. Coulson did battle with telemarketer spam at Wellspring Arms, Zayne was readying himself to ship off from Goodvalor's by putting up a help wanted sign, and Toby swung by to inform him that it took him this long to get used to calling the 'droids' by the right word, which Zane informed him any new employees are going to have to do, too.

Now, as for yesterday, where once again everything that happened on the island went on in town. I'm starting to wonder if any students stuck around for the break, or if they all went home to hide from Fandom's whimsy the day after classes let out.

Lizzie was filming her video blog at the Boards when Jane interrupted, and there was some roleplaying, and there were some emotions flying about, and, long story made short, Lizzie and I agree to let Jane stay a little longer while she pulls things back together for herself. Surreal opened the Magic Box and took advantage of the slow day to polish her boots, and Stiles and Derek left the New Year's party early to have a little chat.

And then there was a New Year's party at Town Hall, courtesy of Eric. People showed up, including but not limited to Jessica and Cade, whose main topic of conversation seemed to focus on his clip-on bowtie. That's class, let me tell you. George confused the long-lived Liara by asking if she was looking forward to 2013, Yeul and Mercy talked about how they spent their holidays, and Kitty and Clint - and Clint's suit - were all there, and the first two of those three talked about how New Years Eves past have always gone... less than smoothly. Holidays never do seem to go well in worlds like ours, do they?

Atton and Sia spent the evening bickering over whether or not Sia ever has fun and then, of course, doing more arguing still over their reasons for arguing so much at all. Olive considerately informed Sia that she looked like a disco ball, and then went and played the 'guess who' game with Victor who looked, and I quote the note as it's given to me, 'Spiffy.' No idea whether or not that means he looked like a disco ball, too.

April and Jack talked about how they spent their respective holidays, and then April approved of Emma. Which is good, because she's Emma. And then Jack and Emma - One of these days, I'm going to actually get out and see her while she's on the island - talked about how she's glad he's doing better, and about plans for Sookie's bache-- Huh. I'd say congratulations but I don't know that she's even on the island listening to this. Derek pulled Stiles aside for that talk that the notes grazed by earlier, Toby told Olive that she looked nice and I imagine not at all like a disco ball, and Mercy and Hanna talked about their Christmases and their 2013 plans.

And then the mingling started. What went on up there must have just been a warm-up for the really mingly parts, I suppose.

Eric and Mitchell talked about the new werewolf in town - Derek, I'll assume - and Mitchell talked about how he wanted to find Bo before midnight. Mitchell and Jack caught up on what's going on in Mitchell's life, and then about Derek and Allie. Lex and Cade let a talk about champagne lead to plans to go drinking in Metropolis, Jaina and Zayne wondered if it was too early to wish one another a happy New Year before talking about Zayne heading back to fight a war, and Bruce and Emma talked about how Bruce's reality moves at a faster speed than this one, and wished one another a happy birthday and talked about animal transformations. All perfectly normal Fandom conversation, there.

There was a dance floor, as these things often have, and then there were the obligatory dark corners where people go in order to attempt and fail at being antisocial. Really, you'd think Fandomites would know by now that the only way to avoid hordes of social interaction would be to just stay home in the first place.

… Yes, I just spent a semester lecturing about socializing with other people. I'm done teaching that now, I'm moving on to bigger, less tiring things.

Allie and Kaidan discussed whether they were dressed for the occasion and the possibility of leaving th'party early. Jim decided that he and Cara were friends based on one of those crazy weekends here she apparently robbed him blind. Surreal made an attempt to bribe Cara into a kiss at midnight if they skip over the dancing, and Yeul and Liara talked about how Liara has been hiding on her own, these days. Kate Daniels and Sam LaCroix talked about skateboarding, or a lack thereof, and then Christmas, or, again, a lack thereof. Sam and Toby did some catching up that led to an invite for Toby to go to Seattle. Nice this time of year, I hear. April mistook Coulson for a chaperone which somehow led to talk of pet costumes. Knowing April, somehow this turn of conversation doesn't surprise me in the least. Luke didn't approve of Percy's lurking, Kate informed Toby that she wasn't enjoying her drink because it wasn't spiked, April decided that Eric's beverage was Hawaiian punch, which strikes me as a little odd for a vampire, and Jaina questioned Eric's lurking while Ulrik pulled a double-take at him.

And then there was a countdown, and now it's 2013. So far, all that's really different from 2012 is the number of notes I've had to read on a Tuesday morning.

Happy New Year, Fandom. This is Jonothon Starsmore, signing off.
