Fandom Radio, Tuesday, August 21st

Ah, break week at the end of summer. I would probably appreciate this week all the more if I had some sort of education to be getting back to. Now, if only half the people I actually know around here weren't up and leaving.

*Chittering*

No, you lot are stuck with me on the island for a while longer, I'm afraid. I'll be teaching what passes for a class on this rock. To a group of impressionable youths, or something of the sort. Yes, I'm just as surprised they're letting me do this as you are, squirrels.

Now, let's have those notes from yesterday, shall we? Starting with what went on in the Dorms, as the school is closed for the week, of course.

On the list of the up and leaving is Tara, who was taking a moment to look through her scrapbook before it was time to go. Wesley called to assure her that Fandom is, in fact, a good school to go to pre-Sunnydale, and she and Ben talked about how they missed last year's summer-end farewells and about how people accept you for who you are around here. I suppose that's because none of us fit in. And so we all do, as a result.

Look, it's a sound enough theory.

Tara got a phone call from Kennedy, off to Brazil, and they spoke about making leaps in life and college and how Kennedy is proud of Tara. I know you're probably off the island now, luv, but for what it's worth Kennedy is hardly the only one that's proud of you. Warren and Tara spoke about how he was nervous to be headed off to school, especially in light of the usual curriculum here on the island, and then the topic leapt merrily along to the Savage Land. It's cold, and then there's a jungle with dinosaurs. And Tara and Raven agreed that they don't like this time of year, and they talked about Raven missing Azarath before conversation turned to college roommates.

… I had one of those, once. For about a week. He didn't like me much, but at least he wasn't the one who tried to kill me while I was attending classes at Empire State University.

Ahem.

In the garden, Cassidy was tending to the plants. She told Ender about how she hates goodbyes, though, really, don't we all? And she asked for book recommendations, so that she can continue to study even after he's left. Loki decided that gardening looked like a lot of hard work, and Cassidy explained that as a Queen from her world, she needs to have a connection with the land. And so Loki offered to take Cassidy to see Yggdrasil someday. I cannot see this ending at all poorly.

And, that's all for the dorms. Now, onto Town. Town, where Electroclash woke up to find that she'd been appointed the school's guidance counsellor.

I was just filled with this overwhelming sense of schadenfreude, and I'm not certain if that's at her expense, or that of the students. Whatever the case, that's brilliant.

At Stark Industries, Ender was in a fairly good mood, possibly because he got to resign at the end of the day. Ben stopped by, to the surprise of none, for one conversation at Stark's about how they're no longer freshmen, before kissing led to somebody being dragged into the back room. Every time you hand me a note like this, squirrels, I feel like some horrible voyeur. At least Tara's visit resulted in less back-room-time, with her and Ender discussing last days, and what their respective lives will be like once she's left with Warren and he's left with Ben.

Surreal was a bit jumpy at the Magic Box, but Cara showed up with kisses and a bottle of bedazzled rum in order to soothe her nerves.

… Who bedazzles rum?

*Chittering*

Well, where's my bottle, then?

*Silence*

Oh. I see how it is.

*Chittering?*

No. No, it's too late now.

At Caritas, Jake was steadfastly ignoring whatever it was that Tino was up to. Texting that girl from the Perk, no doubt. And Jack was late for his shift at the Devil's Nest, which got him dirty looks from Tiny that he attempted to make up for by doing his paperwork while checking IDs for minors.

Just think, Jack. In less than a week, there'll be a whole crew of new students that you'll have to redirect to Caritas. Aren't new beginnings grand?

And I believe that's it for the notes. To all of you out there who are moving on to bigger and brighter futures, best wishes to you all and don't be strangers. Even if not being strangers means that you might spend your visits to the island as small horses or insane rockstars. This is Jonothon Starsmore, who isn't pretty enough for a bottle of bedazzled rum, signing off.
